O’ Holy night…

It’s that time of the year where you can’t walk into a shopping center without hearing Mariah Carey’s rendition of ‘All I want for Christmas’.  It may do your head in or it may not but one thing’s for sure heading to a live Christmas carol event is one of the those experiences that is loved by all.

The ‘silly season’ wouldn’t be complete without an evening outing to your local carols by candlelight.  Every community has their own, but we’ve put together a list of the biggest and the best around the country – these are the one’s that go to extremes to make sure everyone is merry!  For dates and times click on the links.

Lord Mayors Carols in the City – Brisbane

Held every year at Brisbane’s beautiful Riverstage. A free event for the family, this year the date is Saturday 8th December with a superb line-up including Troy Cassar-Daley, Paulini, Debra Byrne, Colin Buchanan, New Empire singing their Olympic games theme plus a world class backing band, dance troupe and choir.  Free sample bags for the first 6,000. If you’re a regular, you won’t want to miss it. If you’ve never been before – make this year the start of a new family tradition – you will be glad you did!

Carols in the Domain – Sydney

Carols in the Domain is Australia’s largest free Christmas concert. In 2012 Carols celebrates 30 years and is looking forward to a star studded event.  This year’s Woolworths Carols in the Domain is on Saturday 22 December 2012 and stars Georgie Parker, Samantha Jade, The Collective, Rachael Beck, Legally Blonde The Musical among others.

Mayor’s Christmas Carols – Gold Coast

Special guest this year is the amazing Jessica Mauboy and the event includes performances by Figaro, The 7 Sopranos, The Blenders, Lachlan Wallace and Liz Conde and the Triple Talent Dancers, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 9pm. The highlight of the night will include a twilight Southport Yacht Club flotilla of illuminated boats and all proceeds go to the Salvation Army.

Newcastle Christmas Carols – Newcastle

The Newcastle Christmas Carols this year will feature Darren Percival, Nathan Foley, Caitlin Hartnett, The Robertson Brothers, Liam Burrows and more on stage plus you adding to the community spirit and singing along as well.  While this is a free event it is ticketed – Pick up your FREE tickets from any Newcastle Permanent branch on the Central Coast remember No ticket – No entry!!

Carol’s by Candlelight – Melbourne

Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight is a Melbourne institution held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Monday 24th of December 2012.   Hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson, it features performers such as Lisa McCune, Rachael Leahcar, Marina Prior, Anthony Callea and Darren Percival plus many more.  The Christmas Eve tradition attracts a crowd of over 10,000 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. Hundreds also flock to the Live Site Federation Square where the event is broadcast on the big screen.

The Credit Union Christmas Pageant – Adelaide

First held in 1933, this annual Adelaide tradition is regarded as one of the world’s great pageants.  On the second Saturday in November, more than 300,000 people will line the 3.3km city street route to watch this famous parade, which heralds the start of another festive season.  From humble beginnings with just eight horse-drawn floats and four bands, the event has grown considerably to this it’s 80th anniversary.

The West Australian Christmas Pagaent – Perth

The pageant this year will return to its traditional timeslot and light up the streets of Perth at night.  For its 41st year, the pageant is expected to be more spectacular than ever and will take a new route from the corner of St Georges Terrace and Barrack Street.

So brush up on your carol lyrics, make a beeline for your nearest community Christmas event or head to one of the bigger one’s we’ve outlined here and spread some much needed cheer amongst your family and friends!
