Get your bearings on the city and explore the CBD. Make use of the free hop on hop off shuttle, or rent a bike from Melbourne Bike Share. Be sure to take time to wander the back streets and hunt out the many laneways that are hidden throughout the city. Stop at one of the hip cafes that line the laneways and taste test the much talked about coffee of Melbourne.
Head over to Docklands to marvel at modern architecture then get cultured in the many galleries and museums on offer, such as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) at Federation Square. Once you’re cultured out head to Southbank to stroll along the water, stopping at the various cafes and restaurants along the way for a slight reprieve. Then get back to nature in the middle of Melbourne’s hustle and bustle at Fitzroy Gardens or the Royal Botanical Gardens, both city-havens.
Spend the morning at one of the markets on offer, such as the Queen Victoria Markets or the Rose Street Artists’ Market. If markets aren’t your scene there are plenty of boutique shops or designer stores to discover around the city. Try the Bourke Street Mall, Collins Street, or Swanston Street. The laneways are also a great place to shop for unique pieces and Australian designs.
Once you’re all shopped out slow things down a bit with a leisurely cruise down the Yarra River. Then, take time to peruse the various artworks that line the river at the open air gallery of the Yarra River Gallery, an exceptional way to experience the arts.
Take a tram down to St Kilda for the afternoon for a stroll along the Esplanade. Be sure to pick up a mouth watering pastry or cake at one of the many delectable cafes and bakeries in the area, it will make your afternoon walk just that little bit sweeter.
