Icefields Parkway (2)

Icefields Parkway, Canada

It has been said that the Icefields Parkway is ‘the most spectacular journey in the world’ – and once you’ve driven this crazy-beautiful road that stretches from Banff to Jasper through the breathtaking Canadian Rockies, you’re likely to agree.

_

You’d be hard pressed to find a drive that is more drastically beautiful than this one. Hidden in the crooks of almost every gargantuan mountain are gleaming turquoise lakes, million-year-old glaciers, or (often) both. This part of the world doesn’t do things in small measures.

_

The bounty of wildlife in the Canadian Rockies will have you scrambling for your camera every five minutes for some for of wildlife that’s either crossing the road or meandering in the wilds roadside. Bears, bighorn sheep, caribou, mountain goats and elk are just some of the wild animals you might spot along the way.

_

If you’re looking to get out amongst it all there are plenty of hikes available, some even trailing past the aforementioned turquoise lakes. The Plain of Six Glaciers starting from behind the infamous Lake Louise is one of the best. The epic lake and mountain views are ample reward for making the steep trek skyward, and the quaint tea house perched high atop the mountain will replenish you for the trip back down the mountain.

Trollstigen Mountain Road

Geiranger – Trollstigen, Norway

This drive is a passage through an immensely beautiful landscape where nature dominates and jaw dropping scenery is bountiful.

_

Fjords are carved deep into the landscape with waterfalls cascading down the cliffs like diamond necklaces come undone, and verdant valleys are sprinkled throughout the region as if existing only to compliment the beautiful mountains that rise from their depths.

_

There are plenty of viewing points along the way where you can stop and marvel at the natural spectacle, with Flydalsjuvet being the most popular.
Trollstigen Mountain Road zigzags down the side of a mountain into the depths of the valley below in a dizzying ride of a lifetime. Fortunately, the epic view along the way makes the nerve racking hairpin turns well worth it.

Ring Road, Iceland

Ring road, Iceland

The remote and grandeur beauty of Iceland is pretty hard to beat.

_

If jaw-dropping scenery and unforgettable experiences are what you look for in a road trip then you’re in for a treat, the Ring Road is one epic drive.

_

Natural beauty lies in wait around every corner; looming volcanoes, incredibly beautiful natural hot springs, thunderous waterfalls, and ice-berg laden shorelines are just a few of the unforgettable scenes you will cruise past on this drive, all while the Northern Lights dance in the skies above.

Alaska Highway
Alcan (Alaska Canada Highway), Canada & USA

The Alaska Canada Highway, aka the Alcan, is considered by many to be one of the last mammoth drives through pristine wilderness on Earth.

_

Spanning over 2,000 km from Dawson Creek in British Columbia’s stunning Yukon to Delta Junction in Alaska, this is not a short-stint drive.
Tales from those who’ve made the ultimate trek north tell of wildlife-littered roads, glistening cobalt blue lakes, and mountain vistas as far as they eye can see.

_

There are plenty of stops along the way where you can stretch your legs and gape adoringly at the sheer beauty of the wilderness. Lairde River Hot Springs in British Columbia is a favourite among road trippers looking to soak in natural hot springs amidst a lush natural setting.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Quite possibly the world’s greatest coastal drive – according to proud Aussies anyway – the Great Ocean Road is home to many of Australia’s greats: the surf break at Bells Beach, the infamous 12 Apostles, and a patch of bush near Cape Otway that is home to what looks like the largest congregation of koalas in the country.

Be sure to pause a while at the numerous, undeniably cool small towns along the way, any will do but Lorne wins over most travellers who pass through. Revel in the funky cafes, beautiful beach, and laidback feel of the town. Stay an extra couple of days and you can take time out amidst lush natural surrounds to discover some of the 10 waterfalls hidden in the towns surrounds.
