The Great Barrier Reef
Why not celebrate Australia Day in one of Australia’s most celebrated destinations?
Spend the day above or below the glistening turquoise waters of the reef, weaving between islands on-board a yacht, on the shores of one of the island-gems littered throughout the reef, or any other way you fancy.
This is one extensive beauty to behold, and no matter where you envelop yourself in its charm, the Great Barrier Reef is one epic location to spend Australia Day.
You’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere in Australia that celebrates Australia Day with as much enthusiasm as Sydney Harbour.
The Harbour is centre stage for much of Sydney’s celebrations, with the annual Australia Day Regatta, cruising concerts, Ferrython, and impressive fireworks display just some of the festivities you can enjoy.
Whether you choose to spend the day front and centre on the harbour, or from your own patch of grass harbour-side, this is THE place to be if you love to celebrate in style with your fellow Aussies.
A favourite for many Aussies, Fraser Island is a fantastic place to spend Australia Day enjoying what makes our country so great: the outdoors.
The world’s largest sand island has a lot to offer its visitors, from a pristine rainforest interior that conceals brilliant blue freshwater lakes to long stretches of sand where you can literally 4WD for miles.
Get back to nature this Australia day; spread a blanket on the shores of Lake McKenzie, float down Eli Creek, or relax in one of Champagne Rock Pools’ natural spa baths.
Great Australian Bites festivals
Unleash your inner gastronomer and spend the day indulging on delectable food at one of the Great Australian Bites festivals in Queensland. South Bank in Brisbane is the official home of the festival, but this year both Port Douglas and Airlie Beach are joining in on the fun.
In addition to celebrity-chef-manned food stalls faring fresh Queensland ingredients, you’ll be able to enjoy live music as you saunter between stalls sampling the range of canapés and beverages on offer. And if you stay on after dark at the South Bank festival, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning fireworks display over the Brisbane River.
At the beach
Possibly Australia’s favourite way to celebrate Australia Day, and with so many beauties to choose from we’re not surprised.
Which beach you ask? Any beach really, and often the closest one to your house will do. Some of the most popular stretches of sand to celebrate include the iconic Bondi Beach, Byron Bay’s laid-back beaches, St Kilda and Brighton Beach with its colourful Aussie-themed shacks, beautiful Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, and the long stretch of sand at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.
